Poker Hand
Do you love playing poker – especially Texas Hold’em? If so, then you know that nothing is more exciting than being in every hand, trying to use your poker skill to outwit your opponents. However, if you spend any time playing with even half-skilled poker players, you’ll learn very quickly that the players who win the most hands are the ones who play the fewest hands.
Typically, people who play a lot of hands are known as “loose” players, or “maniacs.” This is because they are willing to play virtually any starting hand in poker and “go fishing” for cards, all the way to the bitter end.
Very few of these loose players can use this crazy playing style to make any money playing poker. While they may have fun playing every hand and the way through to the end, they usually become known as “fish” or “donkeys” – bad players, and they lose all of their chips.
For most players, the best approach is to be a “tight” player. Playing tight means that you only play the best poker starting hands.
There are many different starting hand combinations, but very few of them are worth playing. When you are starting out, the best way to play tight is to play only the top 15 starting hands. These hands have the highest poker hand rankings for winning both before and after the flop. The top 15 starting hands are paired hands from ace to two, ace-king, and ace-queen.
If you only play these top 15 starting hands, you will always have the best odds to win a hand of Texas Hold’em poker. Granted, it doesn’t guarantee you that you will win every hand you play – other players will win in spite of having inferior starting hands. But if you bet these strong starter hands aggressively before the flop, you’ll be able to pick up a lot of the blinds.
Another thing to consider when playing the best poker hand ranking is based on your betting position.
In poker, there are three position ranges: early, middle, and late position. Whenever you are closer to the end of the betting cycle, you are in late position and thus have the most information for making the best poker decisions. If, for example, you are in early position and do not have a sense of your opponents’ late position hands, only play top 15 hands. However, if you are in late position and many of the other players have already folded, you can get away with playing a weaker hand, since there will be fewer players to contend with post flop.
Being a tight player and using only the highest poker hand rankings can be hard to stick to in the heat of the game. But if you stand by these rules, you will win a majority of your poker hands.
